Although bamboo is very popular and prevalent in eco-friendly clothing, and it has attractive fabric properties, it is not clear that it has much environmental benefit over conventional cotton. Bamboo provides drape, sheen, wrinkle-resistance, low shrinkage, breathability, and it is naturally anti-bacterial. The bamboo plant is incredibly fast-growing, and is thus generally considered sustainable. However, to meet growing demand for bamboo fabric, natural forests in China are being replaced by non-organic bamboo farms, and a huge number of toxic chemicals are required to process the bamboo from a plant into a fiber. China is currently the only manufacturer of bamboo fabric. For now, GreenEdge Kids has chosen to include bamboo clothing in its collections.
